First impression - wow. Gut reaction...how do you use this with people who take 16 weeks to learn how to log on??? And at the other end, having students in your class who know a lot more than you do, and always will.

== Okay - what are we talking about here? ==
I've really enjoyed this presentation, and it's fun to be able to do some practice on the spot. I too have the question about using it with our low-level ESOL students and special-needs students.
I have used Chat with ESOL students and it has been both fun and a learning tool. I use it inside Blackboard so it's not open for anyone else to access (keeping it safe). I then print out the Chat sessions (a little time-consuming) and the students do some Reading tasks. For example, they have to firstly go through the Chat session counting how many times they have written something, and then dividing it into the number of times they were initiating a conversation and the number of times they were responding to someone else. The second "analysis" they do is to find the number of times they have NOT responded to someone, and to then write what they could have said. They later do a third analysis where they look at the kind of language they're using, i.e. formal or informal, and so on.

This has certainly been enlightening, if only because it raises lots of questions, e.g. how do we get students engaged? I think they would be great, after seeing how they cope with gmail chat!
PERSON D
Hello everyone! It's very interesting learning something new!
